Speaking to the Mirror, Simon Grayson has encouraged Lamine Kone to earn a move away from Sunderland if that is what the player wants.

Kone has been linked with a move away from Sunderland already this summer following their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship, but the Ivorian is still at the Stadium of Light, with just over two weeks of the transfer window remaining.

Grayson has praised the performance of the defender so far this season, but warned the 28-year-old if he wants a move away from Sunderland, he will have to earn it through his performances, he said: “While people are still here, if they’re thinking about options to leave, play well and make that happen.

“Kone? I think he’s up for the fight. By the sounds of it and the way he has played, he has looked very comfortable and shown his true quality.”

So far Kone has made two appearances this season, in the 1-1 draw with Derby County on the opening day of the campaign and against Norwich City, who Sunderland recorded a 3-1 victory over on Sunday.

Grayson opted not to play Kone last Thursday in the Carabao Cup tie against Bury, but he could make his third appearance of the season against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow evening.

The Black Cats will be going in search of their second victory of the season against Sheffield Wednesday, who have a number of defensive issues heading into the fixture.

Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens are Wednesday’s only senior options in central defence, but the latter picked up an injury against QPR last weekend, which has left him a doubt for tomorrow’s clash.

The Verdict

Grayson’s message to his Sunderland players is clear and it also shows the authority he has at the Stadium of Light, despite only being the club’s coach for a short period of time.

Kone’s performances so far this season have been impressive, with the defender helping Grayson’s side make a positive start to their Championship return.

Losing the 28-year-old would undoubtedly be a blow, but if the player is looking for a move away from the Stadium of Light, there is not much the club can do, which will be frustrating for Grayson.
