Speaking to the BBC, Simon Grayson has confirmed Sunderland are making progress in the transfer market and are edging closer to completing a “couple of deals.”

Grayson is just weeks into his job at The Stadium of Light, but has already been active in the transfer window, strengthening Sunderland’s defence ahead of their first return to the Sky Bet Championship since 2007.

Everton duo, Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning, have both arrived in the North East on season-long loans, but attentions are now turning to Sunderland’s attack, which is looking bare after activity early in the transfer window.

Jermain Defoe, who scored 15 goals last season, has left the Black Cats for AFC Bournemouth, whilst Fabio Borini has opted for a move to AC Milan this summer.

Grayson revealed more arrivals were planned, but would not name individuals, he said: “We’re moving forward with quite a few new faces.

"Over the next few days hopefully we'll get close to doing a couple of deals.

"I don't really comment on individuals as you'll get used to, but we'll be moving forward with a couple and hopefully a few more will come along after too."

Aiden McGeady is one player who is reportedly close to agreeing a move to Sunderland, with the Everton forward set to link back up with Grayson, after a successful loan spell at Preston North End with the 47-year old last season.

Sunderland are also closing in on a deal for James Vaughan, with the Bury striker set for a move back to the Championship after an impressive 2016/17 campaign, which saw him score 24-goals in League One.
