Signing this lethal star could be an expensive mistake for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday should avoid the temptation to sign Jack Marriott.

The Peterborough United striker was on song last season and is now being chased by a hoard of eager Championship sides, with a reported £6.5 million being demanded.

Wednesday are one of the sides linked, but would do well to steer clear.

On the surface, going in for Marriott would appear to be a no-brainer.

The 23-year old had a remarkable season at the ABAX Stadium. The striker smashed in 33 goals across all competitions, as he was involved in nearly half of all of Peterborough’s league goals.

His time at Luton saw a return of 22 league goals over his two seasons there. There can be no doubting his finishing.

This does not mean he is the right man for Jos Luhukay’s Wednesday side.

Any time a player has such a high ratio of activity in a side’s goals it suggests that the system is orientated around feeding that player.

Often when the player is taken out of that system, their game falls apart. It was one of the main reasons Jordan Rhodes thrived at Blackburn, but has struggled since. Signing Marriott would be a repeat of that mistake.

Sheffield Wednesday have more than enough options going forward. They are so oversupplied that a clear out is required more than a stock up.

Marriott will not be cheap. His importance to Peterborough and the competition for his signature will inflate his price beyond his worth. Luhukay would be better off saving his pennies for more pressing concerns.
