Sunderland are firmly in the market for a new number one this summer having seen young sensation Jordan Pickford depart for Premier League Everton earlier in the summer, and Vito Mannone jump ship for Reading.

New Black Cats boss Simon Grayson will want a deal tied up before his side entertain Derby on the opening weekend, and it is reported that former England goalkeeper Rob Green is the man Grayson wants between the sticks next month.

The 37-year-old shot stopper has been made available by Leeds for transfer, and Green could grab one final big move before his long career comes to an end.

Relegated Sunderland have seen many players depart this summer and are in the midst of a rebuild, and the addition of Green would certainly represent a short term fix to their goalkeeping headache.

Green is an extremely experienced keeper having played internationally and in the Premier League for a number of years, and this is exactly what Grayson is seeking this summer.

Although Sunderland fans will harbour hopes and dreams of returning straight to the top flight, more realistic fans will realise that this is a season of transition, and the club may follow a similar path to Aston Villa and record a mid table finish in their first year back at this level.

Green is certainly a ‘steady the ship’ signing, and as more funds become available to Grayson over the next year, a more long term option will be found.
