Play-off heartbreak struck Sheffield Wednesday last season as they were defeated in the semi finals at Hillsborough on penalties by eventual winners Huddersfield Town.

A devastating blow to Carlos Carvalhal’s side who have suffered play-off defeat in each of the past two seasons, fans will be hoping it’s third time lucky for the Owls next year as they embark on another Premier League push.

Adding to his already strong squad this summer will be on the agenda for Wednesday’s Portuguese boss, and despite boasting the third best defensive record last season, players are available this summer that will further enhance Wednesday's dominant back-line.

After a successful spell on loan with Brighton in which promotion was achieved, Belgian defender Sebastien Pocognoli is set to be a free agent this summer when his contract with West Bromwich Albion expires.

Interest in the defender will be rife, with newly promoted Brighton sure to be considering a permanent switch for their loan man.

Wednesday should declare their interest in the former Standard Liege man early, as he would be the perfect addition to the south Yorkshire side.

The full back would add quality and depth to the squad, and would provide serious competition for a Wednesday’s other left sided players.

Carvalhal must make only several additions to his squad this summer to maintain balance, as his side is only a couple of quality signings away from Premier League football.

Pocognoli is one such addition, and his experience gained across the continent and in helping Brighton to promotion last season could prove vital.

A perfect match for both parties, Wednesday should look to get a deal for Pocognoli tied up early.
