Reading will not be appointing Luis Castro as Paul Clement's successor with the Vitoria de Guimaraes boss unable to agree terms with the Championship club.

The 47-year-old has impressed in his native Portugal this season, with Guimares fifth in the table after a strong season so far, even though he has been working on a very small budget.

That prompted interest in Castro from the Royals, who sacked Clement at the end of last week.

However, Sky Sports have revealed that the 57-year-old couldn't agree terms with the Berkshire outfit who are currently in the bottom three after they lost for an 11th time in the league on Saturday.

Therefore, the Royals will have to look elsewhere as they try to land a new boss, with the report also stating that former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is on the shortlist.

Whether an appointment is made before the weekend remains to be seen, with Reading facing a huge game against fellow relegation rivals Rotherham at the New York Stadium.

They are three points behind the Yorkshire side going into the game.

The Verdict

You can't really say whether this is a blow for Reading as we don't know how Castro would've adapted to life in England.

However, those making the decisions need to act quickly as we are reaching a critical point in the season and the club needs a new leader.

Ideally, they will be in place for this weekend ahead of what is a massive game but that could be a tough ask now.
