Gareth Ainsworth looks increasingly likely to stay on as Wycombe boss despite interest in his services from Millwall, according to Sky Sports.

The 46-year-old is reportedly on a three-man shortlist to take over from Neil Harris at The Den alongside the Lions' caretaker boss Adam Barrett and former Stoke manager Gary Rowett.

Harris stepped down from his position earlier this month following Millwall's disappointing start to the season which had seen them go seven matches without a win, and Lions chiefs have identified Ainsworth as one of the leading candidates to take over at the club.

It also understood the Wycombe boss has also spoken to Sunderland about replacing Jack Ross at the Stadium of Light, with it becoming clear that Ainsworth's excellent work at Wanderers over the last seven years has not gone unnoticed.

However, it now appears likely that Ainsworth will remain at Adams Park to lead his side into a period of new ownership, with American investor Rob Couhig currently making an attempt to buy a 75% stake in the club.

The Chairboys are currently sitting in the automatic promotion spots in League One after making an impressive start to the season under Ainsworth's continued leadership.

The Verdict

This will come as an enormous boost for Wycombe fans who would have surely feared the worst when Ainsworth was linked with the roles at Sunderland and Millwall.

He has been a superb manager for the Chairboys over the past seven years and the club's supporters will now fancy their chances of gaining promotion this season with Ainsworth seemingly committed to his role.

Meanwhile, this will come as a blow to Millwall who appeared to be seriously considering Ainsworth for the manager's job, but it does make their decision somewhat easier with only two managers now left in the frame.

At this point, Rowett seems like the best man for the job at The Den and it would be something of a surprise if he is not appointed over the next week or so.
