Brighton and Hove Albion have been confirmed as the club bidding to secure Paddy McNair’s service this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Sunderland have rejected a £2m bid from Brighton for the midfielder’s signature this summer.

The ex-Manchester United youngster produced some good performances towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign in the Sky Bet Championship, but was unable to help Sunderland avoid relegation.

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman featured on 16 occasions for Sunderland last season, scoring five goals, including four in his last five appearances of the season.

Despite McNair’s best efforts, Sunderland finished bottom of the Championship table and are now preparing for life in the third-tier of English football under Jack Ross, who was appointed at the Stadium of Light last week.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland, who are now under a new regime, are under no pressure to sell their assets at a cut-price.

Brighton’s £2m bid to take McNair south is viewed as low.

The Verdict

A bid of £2m for McNair seems awfully low, considering the talent the midfielder has.

McNair really stepped up and tried to show some quality when Sunderland seemed doomed last season, which has to be admired.

His importance to Sunderland was highlighted in his final five appearances and it is unlikely the Black Cats will budge on such low offers.

Time will tell if Brighton’s interest is serious, with Sunderland surely expecting more interest in the Northern Irish midfielder.
