Derby County are speaking to American businessman Michael Dell as the billionaire considers putting a 'major financial injection' into the Championship club.

Rams owner Mel Morris has been seeking fresh investment since last season and reports in December suggested that a deal would be finalised in the New Year, with Henry Gabay believed to be the frontrunner.

As we know, that didn't happen and whilst he is still said to be interested, the Telegraph have revealed this afternoon that Morris is in advanced talks with Dell over a deal, although they stressed that Gabay is still interested.

They claim that a range of options are on the table from Dell, with a full takeover, investment or even a significant loan all possibilities with the American, who had been in talks to invest in Sunderland last year.

Derby's issues with FFP have been well-documented in recent months, with the East Midlands outfit charged earlier this year for breaching spending rules - something that could bring a points deduction.

Phillip Cocu's side are five points away from the play-offs with nine games to play in the Championship.

The verdict

This is very good news for Derby fans as they will have been extremely frustrated at how long this has dragged on and they may have been worried that talks had stalled.

The fact there are two serious parties increases the chances of one happening and it's clear the club need fresh investment if they are to kick-on.

So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out but progress is being made behind the scenes.
