An emotional return to Stoke City could now be on the cards for Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan this summer.

The 35-year-old is certainly no stranger to the bet365 Stadium faithful, having made over 330 appearances for the Potters during a nine-year stay with the Staffordshire club between 2008 and 2017.

The experienced midfielder helped Stoke win automatic promotion from the Championship in 2008, but is now facing an uncertain future going into the summer.

Fresh off the back of winning the Championship play-offs, Aston Villa recently announced their retained list, with Whelan leaving Villa Park upon the expiry of his contract.

Now a free agent, the Stoke Sentinel have sparked serious speculation regarding a potential return for Whelan, saying that he would "jump at the chance" of returning to the club this summer.
