Mansfield Town bowed out of the League Two play-offs last night, losing 5-3 on penalties to Newport County.
After bagging a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade, they were held 0-0 to force the tie to extra time and eventually penalties. It was an engrossing 0-0 draw in which both sides had chances to kill off the tie.
Instead it all came down to spot kicks from 12-yards and agonisingly for Tyler Walker, he missed the crucial kick. He’s bagged 22 league goals for the Stags this season, but couldn’t hit the back of the net with his final kick of the season.
He’ll go back to Nottingham Forest with a full season of senior football under his belt and a lot of character-building disappointment in his locker too.
Forest fans were quick to comment on his failure last night, with some suggesting he’s not up to the task of playing in the Championship. Some offered words of comfort, but after failing to get Mansfield promoted, Walker has a huge job on his hands forcing a start at the City Ground.

a true forest player

The most encouraging thing I can say about poor Tyler Walker is that he's the kind of player I'd love #nffc to sign this summer. I worry that he might struggle under the current regime though…

Walker showed today exactly why he shouldn’t be anywhere near our squad. No room for sentiment here….. poor first touch, awful decision making, and easily brushed off the ball. Sell to Mansfield on a perm with a hefty sell on clause in case he proves me wrong #NFFC

One things for certain – the likes of Grant, Smith and Walker shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team next season. Walker still too lightweight, Smith not even playing lately and Grant is still being loaned out at 22/23 #nffc

Unlucky Mansfield, that’ll be character building for Walker in the long run but gutted for him now. He’ll come back to #NFFC a better player.
