Chelsea youngster Mason Mount had a mightily impressive season.

Thirteen goals and ten assists while on loan at Vitesse in their Eredivisie and Europa League campaigns marked a fine return for a player aged just 19. Should the right club come along, they would benefit enormously from his presence. One club which has a distinct advantage is Derby.

Mount has discussed his admiration for Lampard and his desire to emulate the former Chelsea midfielder’s style of play. The England under-19 international is adaptable, can control play, and has a deadly finish. In these areas, he is well on his way. The one notable area that needs improving is his passing, with a passing percentage of 77.9% last season.  There are few better than Lampard, renowned for his ability to spot and make decisive passes, to give guidance on this.

Mount would also fill the Will Hughes shaped hole in Derby’s side. Will Hughes provided the Rams with real attacking impetus before his move to Watford last summer. While Derby did not struggle for goals last season, they still managed to find themselves locked out by stubborn defences in key games. Signing Mount would see the dynamism required to break through such defences returning to the Derby attack.

Most promoted sides are ones that have taken full advantage of the loan market. If Derby are to stop being also-rans, they must do so as well. Their best asset in this is Lampard’s connection to Chelsea’s academy. They would be wise to use this to sign Mason Mount.
