New Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has announced that his new captain for the South Coast side's return to League 1 will be experienced striker Brett Pitman.

29-year-old Gareth Evans is the official vice-captain, fulfilling a role that did not officially exist at Fratton Park last season, when former captain Michael Doyle led the side back to the fourth tier as champions.

Following the departure of 35-year-old Doyle, who has rejoined his former club Coventry City, Jackett has handed the armband to summer signing Pitman, who netted twice on his debut on Saturday, in a 2-0 friendly win over Bognor.

The decision has split the opinion of Pompey fans - some who are happy to trust their new manager's judgement, especially during his honeymoon period in charge, while others feel that centre-half Christian Burgess should have been awarded the armband.

A compromise might have been to make the former Peterborough United centre-half vice-captain, but Jackett has somewhat surprisingly overlooked the defender for either role of authority.

Pompey fans - what do you make of Jackett's choice as new captain? Should it have been Burgess - or someone else - or are you happy with the selection? Let us know in the comments below...
