With Jack Grealish potentially on the way out of Villa Park this summer, Aston Villa should look to bring in Guus Til from AZ Alkmaar.

Villa’s failure to secure promotion has meant that they will be unable to hold onto their prized midfielder. Yet, with Grealish potentially commanding a transfer fee north of £20 million, Steve Bruce should find himself with sufficient funds to buy a replacement.

Til is one of the most promising players in the Eredivisie. The 2017/18 season saw the 20-year-old establish himself in the starting line-up, notching up 33 league appearances. He set the division alight with nine goals and four assists all from midfield. These displays were rewarded with a first cap for the Netherlands, coming on for the final 12 minutes of a 3-0 win against Portugal.

He will be in demand. His canny knack of being able to pick out through balls and a natural mobility pairs with his aerial strength to create a remarkably well-rounded player. The question is whether Aston Villa can offer enough to tempt him to move across the Channel.

To do this, Bruce will need to emphasise his ambitions to get automatic promotion next season. This could be tricky. Aside from the loss of Grealish, he could well be fighting off bids for key players such as James Chester. Yet if he can keep the rest of his team’s spine, a convincing case for automatic promotion can be made. With the addition of Til, it would be a near certainty.
