Should Aston Villa seriously consider signing this 8-goal star?

With Aston Villa now odds-on favourite to reach Wembley, decisions on who to sign must start to pivot on whether they go up or not.

This is most clearly shown with Lewis Grabban. On-loan from Bournemouth, the striker has been in scintillating form for the Villans with 8 goals in 15 games, not to mention his 12 in 19 for Sunderland. At a rumoured £5 million in Sunday’s Sun, Steve Bruce is eager to snap up an apparent bargain.

Yet the 30-year-old Grabban has not shown Premier League pedigree. He may be capable of banging them in at Championship level, but, in his 24 top-flight appearances, Grabban found the back of the net just once. This is troubling. Grabban’s allure is based on his finishing; he adds little else to the team. Averaging a mere 20 passes a game, creating a solitary assist all season, while being less effective at breaking up play than Villa’s other forwards, Grabban is there to score but do nothing more.

This in itself is not a particular problem. Many clubs have a similar kind of player. Anyone who can reliably put the ball in the net is useful. However, Grabban has failed to prove that he will be able to do so at the highest level. His poor touch and tendency to get caught offside will prevent him from making the step up and being as effective. Ultimately, Aston Villa should sign Lewis Grabban, but only if they fail in the play-offs.
