Sunderland will take a 1-0 lead into the second-leg of the League One play-off semi-final, after defeating Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light on Saturday evening.

The Black Cats were looking to get revenge on Pompey, who had beaten them twice this season already, with their more notable win coming in the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley.

But Jack Ross' men were the far better side on Saturday, and after creating numerous chances in front of goal, substitute Chris Maguire came on to score the winner in some style.

Sunderland were made to hold on late on, when Alim Ozturk was sent off by the referee for bringing down Gareth Evans on the edge of the box - a decision that has divided opinions amongst the Black Cats faithful.

The Turkish defender claimed he had got the ball, and looking back at footage, it is so hard to call - but one thing is for sure, the centre-half will miss the second-leg at Fratton Park if his suspension is not overturned.
