Aston Villa fans have been dealt a real blow as Ritchie De Laet’s injury could now be worse than originally feared.
Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur has revealed on social media that the full-back’s injuries could now see him ruled out for up to a year.
This would see him unavailable for the whole of the season ahead and the entirety of pre-season next season – a bitter blow for Villa fans who were hoping he would be a big part of any potential promotion push.
The former Leicester City man, who cost Roberto Di Matteo around £2 million this summer, is now facing surgery on the injury, sustained in the disappointing midweek 1-1 home draw against Brentford.
A recall for either Micah Richards or Alan Hutton could now be on the cards, with both defenders having struggled for game-time this season.
Di Matteo’s side laboured to a 0-0 draw at Ipswich Town this afternoon, a result which leaves them 18th in the table with eight points from their first eight matches.
Villa fans… what do you make of the news? Just how big of a blow is the loss of the pacey Belgian? Can promotion be achieved without him? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
