Many Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been bemoaning the performance of Julian Borner following the Owls’ 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

Garry Monk elected to start Borner alongside Dominic Iorfa at the heart of the Owls’ defence against Manchester City, with the pair being tasked with preventing both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus from finding many clear chances inside the penalty area.

The 29-year-old, though, who had been struggling to replicate the sort of performances he was showing during the first half of the campaign in recent weeks, was not at his best against Manchester City and he was guilty of producing a couple of nervous moments during the opening 45 minutes.

Borner was at times indebted to Iorfa for recovering on the occasions where he had made mistakes in the first half, and with the defender struggling to find his best form and looking like he could potentially cost the Owls a goal or two during the rest of the match, with City looking for a mistake from Sheffield Wednesday to help them edge ahead.

Monk made the decision to bring Borner off at half time with Tom Lees coming on his place, and the Owls looked a little more assured at the back in the second period, despite Aguero managing to score what proved to be a  controversial winning goal for the Premier League champions.

However, many Sheffield Wednesday fans have been suggesting that they feel Monk made the right decision to bring off Borner at half time, given the defender was looking like he was struggling during what was a poor individual first half performance.
