A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have been bemoaning the performance of defender Joost van Aken following the Owls’ 2-1 defeat at promotion-chasing Norwich City.

Sheffield Wednesday went into the game looking for their first win since Tony Pulis took charge following three successive draws in the Championship, but ultimately despite taking the lead with half an hour the Owls could not hold on and conceded twice in the last ten minutes to drop to the bottom of the division.

The Owls had been under the cosh for prolonged periods against Norwich as was to be expected ahead of the game, but for 80 minutes they defended well and restricted their hosts to just two attempts on target in that time. However, Van Aken and Liam Palmer were both guilty of ball watching for the goals as Wednesday threw away their precious lead.

Quiz: Which club did Sheffield Wednesday sign each of these 25 players from?

Van Aken did manage to make four clearances and one block, but he also lost possession on seven occasions (Sofascore), but he was unable to stay switched on at the crucial stages of the last ten minutes of the game. The 26-year-old lapse in concentration will be a major concern for Pulis who prides himself on his side remaining solid to pick up points.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans pointed out that the defender’s ability to switch off at times makes him unreliable and that the Owls could potentially need to consider finding another solution at centre-back.
