Sunderland suffered their first league defeat of the 2020/21 season, after they were beaten 3-1 by Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light.
Kenny Jackett’s side took the lead on the day through Marcus Harness, but the hosts responded quickly, with Charlie Wyke firing home from close-range.
But Sunderland couldn’t take the chances that came their way in the second-half, as John Marquis capitalised on a mistake from Grant Leadbitter to put Pompey back in front.
Luke O’Nien was then shown his marching orders late into the game, after he gave away a penalty to receive his second bookable offence.
Marquis despatched the penalty to see Portsmouth pick up an impressive win on the day as they moved up to fifth in the League One table.
Sunderland are now sat sixth in the third-tier standings after this frustrating defeat, and will be hoping to get back to winning ways at the earliest of opportunities, starting with a positive result against Rochdale on Tuesday.
Plenty of Sunderland supporters took to social media to issue their thoughts on their first league defeat of the season.
Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below….
Terrible performance today we gifted them all 3 goals..played well for 10 minutes in the 2nd half.. Massive improvement by team and management before Rochdale.. Abysmal😠😠

Poor management today. Why O’Nien was centre back today when we have an actual one on the bench I’ll never know. So many questions to ask.

Bad result. Credit to Pompey they were better team and managed the game better. We move on and have to react quick.

I'm hoping this is just an off day and we can bounce back
My fear is we've been sussed and will struggle against the better teams https://t.co/K2vKPlnOxT
