Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan’s proposed move to Sunderland is off after the player failed to agree terms with the Wearside club, reports Phil Hay of The Yorkshire Evening Post on Twitter.

The 34-year-old had been expected to complete a switch to the north east in the closing hours of the transfer window, but after negotitiations at The Stadium of Light, the two parties have failed to agree a deal.

The former England U20 international only joined the Whites in the summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers to provide competition to fellow summer signing Felix Wiedwald, but Lonergan failed to impress in his seven outings between the sticks this season.

Manager Thomas Christiansen was keen to move the player on and promote from within, but it now looks likely that Lonergan will see out the remainder of the campaign in West Yorkshire.

The Verdict

Lonergan looked certain to seal a switch to The Stadium of Light, but it appears the two parties were a long way from agreeing terms on a contract.

The player would have become the number one at the club and escaped the bench at Elland Road, but obviously feels Chris Coleman’s side had undervalued his services in their negotiations.

Lonergan will now continue to warm the bench at the club, and may even have lost his role as number two, with the likes of young Bailey Peacock-Farrell vying for a place in the first-team squad at Elland Road.
