Shinnie in: The best combined Derby County XI from the last 5 years – Do you agree?

Though they’ve been pretty impressive this season, there’s surely no denying that the Derby County squad is weaker now than it has been for quite some time.

A transfer embargo and a number of key departures in the summer have left Wayne Rooney with a threadbare squad and it’s a testament to the fight he’s instilled in the dressing room that were it not for their 12-point deduction, they’d be six points clear of the bottom three.

The former England captain will no doubt wish he could call on some of the players his predecessors had at their disposal.

We’ve been looking back at the Rams’ squads from the past five years and put together the best combined XI from that period.

It’s likely to be a controversial one – so make sure that you let us know your thoughts…

Scott Carson is our number one and earns that place in our side for his performances in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns, which saw him keep a combined 38 clean sheets.

Ahead of him, there were a number of strong options to choose from at centre-back. Matt Clarke and Richard Keogh can count themselves unlucky to miss out but we’ve gone for a pair that matches experience with talent in Curtis Davies and Fikayo Tomori.

Jaden Bogle, who was so impressive after his emergence under Frank Lampard, gets the nod at right-back over Nathan Byrne and Cyrus Christie.

Ashley Cole may be a big name but his time at the club was far too brief, while Max Lowe’s sample size is too small, and Craig Forsyth has been an excellent servant for the Pride Park outfit but misses out as well.

That leaves us with Lee Buchanan at left-back, who may only be 20 but was fantastic last season and could be a real asset down the left flank with the players around him in this XI.

30 questions about some of Derby County’s best ever players – Can you score 100% correct?

Did Steve Bloomer break the 250-goal mark with Derby?

We’ve opted for a 4-2-3-1 and there can surely be no complaints about having Graeme Shinnie and Will Hughes as our holding duo.

Having scored 28 goals and provided 23 assists since the start of the 2017/18 campaign, current captain Tom Lawrence can count himself unlucky to miss out and it does seem mad not to include Rooney himself but we found it impossible to leave out Tom Ince, Mason Mount, or Harry Wilson.

Up top it could only ever be Matej Vydra, based upon his 21-goal season in 2017/18. How Rooney must wish for a striker of his ilk at the moment.
