Sheffield Wednesday seem to be edging ever-closer to appointing Jos Luhukay's successor, as the Sheffield Star have reported that Steve Bruce is set to takeover at Hillsborough.

It would be a swift return to management for Bruce, who was dismissed as manager of Aston Villa earlier in the season, and he would certainly have a tough job on his hands.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently sat 17th in the Championship table heading towards Christmas, and many supporters will be keen to see their side further up the table.

The Owls have been in a shocking run of form under Luhukay, as they went on a run with one win in their last ten league games, before he was sacked after the defeat to Swansea.

Interim manager Lee Bullen oversaw Sheffield Wednesday's 1-0 win over Preston North End at the weekend, but it's unlikely he will be appointed as permanent manager of the Owls with Bruce's arrival seemingly imminent.

The Owls have a number of players that are underperforming this season, and if Bruce is to arrive at the club, he could be tempted to make wholesale changes in the January transfer window, which could potentially make or break their season.

Bruce might be considered as the obvious choice to replace Luhukay, but he does have a considerable amount of experience under his belt in the Championship, and that is sure to be one of the main reasons as to why he is the favourite for the job.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will be hoping that a new man is in charge for their game against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day, in what would be a tough first game for Bruce against promotion chasing Boro.

The Verdict

It would be the safe and obvious choice.

Bruce has the managerial experience needed in the Championship, and I'm confident in saying that he should be the manager required to help ease their relegation fears.

There's a huge amount of potential in the Owls squad and if Bruce can get them on a good run of form, they should be back on the rise.
