Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy believes that Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion ‘deserve’ promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds currently sit top of the Championship table, a point clear of West Brom in second. The pair hold handsome leads over third-placed Fulham and have sat in the top-two of the division for large parts of the season.

Whether the remaining nine games of the season can be played remains to be seen, but there’s a strong possibility that if they aren’t, Leeds and West Brom will be awarded a promotion to the Premier League on sporting merit.

And, in the eyes of Wednesday midfielder, Pelupessy, he sees no issue with that.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “It’s hard to say what should happen but Leeds and West Brom deserve it because they’ve spent almost the whole season in those (automatic promotion) places.”

Below Leeds and West Brom, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Preston North End make up the play-off places, which caused some debate about what should happen to the usual end-of-season lottery.

Nevertheless, in the eyes of Pelupessy, they deserve a chance to compete for an important place in the Premier League.

He continued: “The play-off places are really hard too because the teams from third to sixth deserve a chance (to win promotion) and everyone knows how important it is to get into the Premier League.”

For Pelupessy and his Wednesday teammates, they are drifting towards a mid-table finish.

The Verdict

The view of most in the Championship is that Leeds and West Brom deserve promotion this season, even if it is on sporting merit.

The pair have been in the top-two of the division for so long and in the event of the games resuming, they’d be heavy favourites to push on and secure Premier League football.

Rivalries aside, many Wednesday fans will share Pelupessy’s view.
