Sheffield Wednesday are historically one of England’s biggest clubs and regularly attract huge attendances through the gates at Hillsborough.

The last decade or so haven’t been the most exciting for the Owls, but they have still managed to get huge numbers at many big games.

With a couple of memorable cup ties and a few big playoff games, Hillsborough has hosted a lot of big games for Sheffield Wednesday.

Here, we look at their top three attendances in the last few decades…

Sheffield United, March 1992

In March 1992, 40,327 filled Hillsborough for a huge Steel City Derby in the First Division, the last before the 'Premier League' era.

Although it was their biggest attendance in recent years, it was a day to forget for Owls fans, as Sheffield United won 3-1.

Phil King scored a consolation goal for the home team.

Man United, November 1998

39,427 packed Hillsborough for a big tie against Manchester United in the 1998/99 Premiership campaign.

Wednesday recorded a huge result, with a 3-1 win, with goals from Niclas Alexandersson (2) and Wim Jonk.

Wednesday finished 12th that season under Danny Wilson, their penultimate campaign in the top flight.

Wycombe, May 2012

Wednesday slumped down to League One, as did their bitter rivals Sheffield United, but it was the Owls who were to return first, in 2012.

Dave Jones’ men pipped United to promotion, finishing second that season.

38,082 spectators watched the Owls confirm that, with a 2-0 win over Wycombe, with goals from Michail Antonio and Nile Ranger.
