Sheffield Wednesday play Portsmouth in one of the opening games of the new League One season and both clubs want the campaign to get off to a flyer and will both be wanting a victory.

With the Owls, they managed to seal a play-off spot last time around in the third tier and despite being desperate for a place back in the Championship, the club were unable to get to the final. Instead, Sunderland won the competition and left Darren Moore's side resigned to playing in the third tier again.

As for Pompey, they would have loved to be in the play-off mix but despite spending plenty of time in the top half of the division, Danny Cowley's side couldn't break into the top six and had to settle for a top half finish. Both teams will now want to build on that in the next campaign.

Ahead of the game then, here is all you need to know.

Latest team news

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore hasn't said too much in terms of injuries and minus Will Vaulks, who didn't feature too much in pre-season with a slight injury, there might be a full quota of players to choose from for the Owls. Moore has also admitted that the club will lineup in the same formation as last season, even with no injuries.

As for Portsmouth, they will be without Joe Morrell for this game and potentially the next three too. He had an injury when playing for Wales and now looks like he will have to sit out of action for nearly a month for Pompey.

Score prediction

Portsmouth have signed plenty of promising players this offseason and they've also been able to finally boost their strikeforce as well. The club's supporters weren't sure they'd have many forward options but they've now been able to sign plenty of forwards and the club can now think about potential promotion. Sheffield Wednesday though were very strong last year and having strengthened and signed Michael Smith, you'd have to fancy the Owls. 1-0 Wednesday.
