Sheffield Wednesday's Matt Penney has completed a season-long loan move to St. Pauli, where he will link up with former Owls boss Jos Luhukay.

The Dutch coach struggled when in charge of the Championship side and most fans agreed that it was the right time for him to go when he did depart. However, the one positive of his reign was how he gave some younger players a chance.

And, one who made the step up relatively well was Penney. The left-back made 16 appearances last season and impressed at left-back but he has fallen behind Liam Palmer and Morgan Fox this season. As a result, he hasn't made the matchday squad in the opening fixtures.

Therefore, the Yorkshire outfit have sanctioned a loan move for the 21-year-old, with the official site confirming he has joined St. Pauli for the remainder of the season.

Luhukay's side have endured a tough start to the campaign, losing twice and drawing once in their opening three games, which has left them second from bottom in the Bundesliga II.

Penney could make his debut against Holstein Kiel on Monday.

The Verdict

This seems like a fantastic move for the player as he needed to look elsewhere to get regular football and this is a great opportunity.

It is taking Penney out of his comfort zone and trying a new league, culture and language is going to make him a better player in the years to come.

Most importantly, he is joining up with a manager he knows and that should give him the confidence to settle in quickly and he will hope to make a big impact at a club with a real passionate fan base.
