George Boyd is facing a lengthy period out of first-team action, with the Sheffield Wednesday man undergoing shoulder surgery, reports the Sheffield Star.

Carlos Carvalhal confirmed after Wednesday’s victory over Brentford last night that he would be without Boyd for several weeks, following his surgery.

Boyd required surgery after he picked up an injury in training.

The 31-year-old was one of a handful of summer signings Carvalhal made during the transfer window, with the winger arriving at Hillsborough for free, having seen his contract with Burnley expire.

So far this season the winger has made four appearances for the Owls in the Championship, helping Carvalhal’s men make a steady start to the 2017/18 campaign.

The Owls have picked up 12 points from a possible 21 in the Championship, putting together a six game unbeaten run.

Carvalhal’s side last tasted a league defeat on the opening day of the season, with their performance really picking up following the international break at the end of last month.

So far in September, Wednesday have recorded back-to-back victories at Hillsborough over Nottingham Forest and Brentford, helping Carvalhal’s side move into the play-offs

The Verdict

Boyd’s injury is a particular blow for Wednesday, who are heading into a testing period with fixtures against Cardiff City, Sheffield United and Leeds United coming up.

The 31-year-old has had a slow start to the season by his standard, but will be confident of improving as he settles in at Hillsborough.

Boyd has bags of experience in the Championship, having previously been part of a promotion winning squad at Burnley, and that experience will be crucial for the Owls as they go in search of promotion later in the season.
