Chris Hughton is not interested in succeeding Steve Bruce as Sheffield Wednesday boss after the 58-year-old reportedly resigned earlier today.

Whilst Bruce's decision to walk out hasn't been confirmed by the club, several news outlets, including the BBC, are stating that the former Wigan chief has left Hillsborough as he closes in on the vacant Newcastle job.

That will leave the Owls in a difficult position and they have been dealt a blow with the news that Hughton, the man many fans want to come in, is not keen on the role according to the Mirror Transfer blog (18:18).

They state that the former Brighton boss has rejected an approach from Wednesday because he doesn't feel it's the right time to get back into work.

Hughton would have been an outstanding choice for the Owls as he has proven himself in the Championship over the years, winning promotion with Newcastle and more recently with the Seagulls, who he then established as a Premier League side before he was dismissed in May.

The Yorkshire side will want an appointment sorted extremely quickly as they begin their season at Reading in under three weeks time.

The Verdict

This is a significant blow for Wednesday as Hughton would have been a brilliant appointment as he is a quality manager at this level.

However, you can understand why he doesn't want a job in the Championship just yet as he has just been sacked and may want a break from football.

Unfortunately for the Owls, they have no time to waste so they have to look elsewhere. Bruce's decision has left them in an awful position and they are going to struggle to find a candidate as good as Hughton to take over.

So, they simply have to move on quickly to find a replacement and you have to feel for the owner who will surely feel let down by Bruce.
