Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan believes the club have brought in 'one of the better managers in the league' after Garry Monk was named as the Owls new boss.

The Yorkshire outfit had been on the lookout for a replacement for Steve Bruce for the past few months and they finally made a decision over the international break, with the former Birmingham boss taking over.

And, Scottish playmaker Bannan told the Sheffield Star that this was a real coup for Wednesday and backed Monk to get the most out of the current squad.

"We all know what Garry Monk has done in his managerial career so far, it has been very good. It's a great appointment for the club, a real statement of intent. He is one of the better managers in this league. He has a good bunch to work with so it should make a good combination."

Monk will be preparing for his first game in charge which comes against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town on Sunday, with the Terriers themselves under new management after Danny Cowley recently took over.

The verdict

It's no surprise to see Bannan speak positively about Monk and you can't really expect him to say anything else!

However, to state that he is one of the best in the league is high praise and it suggests that the manager has made a real positive initial impression on the midfielder and the rest of the group.

It's now down to the players to implement his ideas on the pitch and picking up three points in Sunday's big game would be an excellent start.
