Tom Lees has encouraged Sheffield Wednesday to mathematically secure their place in the Sky Bet Championship’s Play-Offs this weekend at Ipswich Town, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Saturday’s victory over Derby County, combined with Leeds United’s defeat to Burton Albion, left Wednesday five-points clear of their Yorkshire rivals, who sit seventh.

With just two fixtures of the Championship season remaining, Wednesday require just two-points to secure a place in the top-six, something Lees is hopeful his side can achieve this coming weekend, he said:

“It would be nice to get the job done there (at Ipswich) and then we can start to focus on the play-offs and then the manager can do what he wants to do in the last game of the season. But we are not getting ahead of ourselves and we have got to secure it mathematically.

“We have got to go there fully focussed and full of concentration and make sure we do as you never know what is happening in the other games and you do not want an almost play-off type situation in the final game.”

A difficult end to February and an inconsistent March looked to have seriously dented Wednesday’s chances of making the end of season Play-Offs, but five victories from as many matches, has put Carlos Carvalhal’s side in a commanding position.

Victory over Ipswich this weekend will secure a top-six finish, ahead of the final day of the season, when Wednesday face Play-Off rivals Fulham at Hillsborough.
