Carlos Carvalhal will be looking to make minor tweaks to his Sheffield Wednesday squad this summer, as he looks to put the play-off pain from the previous two campaigns behind the Owls, and lead them back to the Premier League for the first time since 2000.

Despite emerging as one of the Sky Bet Championship’s most consistent sides over the last 24-months under Carvalhal, Wednesday have tried and failed twice to reach the top-flight via the play-offs.

The Portuguese manager will be looking to make slight changes within his squad this summer, to turn his ‘nearly men’ into a promotion outfit during the 2017/18 campaign.

Central midfield is reportedly an area that Carvalhal wants to improve this summer, with Aaron Mooy and Graham Dorrans two names already linked with a move to Hillsborough.

A move for Mooy, who looks set for an opportunity in the Premier League, is unlikely, whilst competition for Dorrans is expected to be high, with Rangers also interested.

One alternative Carvalhal could look to this summer is Stoke City’s Charlie Adam, whose future with the Potters is unclear.

At the age of 31, Adam’s next move could be back into the Championship, where he has previously excelled, before proving his worth in the Premier League with Blackpool, Liverpool and Stoke.

Adam’s last appearances in the Championship came during the 2009/10 campaign, when he helped Blackpool to promotion - scoring 18 goals from midfield in an excellent individual season.

Carvalhal has plenty of options in central midfield, but the area is lacking promotion experience, and there is little doubt that the likes of Barry Bannan, Sam Hutchinson and Kieran Lee could use the footballing brain of Adam to assist them.

If Carvalhal is targeting a central midfielder to take Wednesday to the next level, it must be one with promotion experience. With Adam potentially available and having showcased his ability in the Championship before, the Owls should seriously consider a move for him.
