With the Frederico Venâncio saga rumbling on, Sheffield Wednesday should look at bringing in other defenders as well. One possible option would be Wolves’ Roderick Miranda.

The 27-year-old Portuguese centre-back found himself sitting on the bench for most of the second half of the season and will be looking elsewhere in a search for first-team football.

Miranda’s season started promisingly following his move from top-flight Portuguese side Rio Ave. Trusted to start, he played all but 14 minutes of the first 14 games of the season. Yet Nuno Espirito Santo started to put more trust in Ryan Bennett and Willy Boly. The back three of Bennett, Boly, and club captain Conor Coady went on to start together in all but five of the remaining 32 league fixtures.

Despite this, Miranda showed promise. He completed 38 out of his attempted 45 tackles, while making the most clearances per game (5.6) of anyone at the club. The sole area that gave cause for concern was his tendency to give away fouls; the giving away of a penalty against Hull was a particularly frustrating example.

For Wolves, Miranda struggled to stack up against the best back three in the division. He is not ready to make the step-up to the Premier League. Yet he can still do a job at a Championship side looking to be competitive, especially now that he has a season of experience in the league under his belt. Venâncio should remain Wednesday’s focus, but Miranda could prove a handy addition to the squad.
