With Sheffield Wednesday being forced to be frugal in this transfer window, they should offload Steven Fletcher.

The Scottish international striker has been at the club since signing on a free transfer from Sunderland in 2016. However, Wednesday have better options available. There is no need for the club to keep him on their books.

Last season was a return to the form expected of Fletcher these days. He achieved a paltry return of two league goals from 19 appearances before a knee injury in February ended his season in unceremonious fashion. Nonetheless, he was not on target to match the 11 goals he scored in 2016/17. It felt more reminiscent of his time at Sunderland where he had several middling seasons.

Competition will be fierce at the beginning of next season: Gary Hooper will return from injury, Sam Winnall will return from his loan swap at Derby, while both Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao hit surprising veins of form. Should Jordan Rhodes and Fernando Forestieri still be at the club come Deadline Day, there will be more than enough competition to be on the bench, let alone the starting line-up.

If Fletcher is to rediscover his form, he will be better suited somewhere he is guaranteed to get a run of games. There will be clubs interested in him as he comes with pedigree, but his time at Hillsborough should come to a close.
