Sheffield Wednesday should hijack Middlesbrough’s reported move for this player

Published

on

Ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s opening day fixture against Preston North End, the South Yorkshire side appear to be short of numbers, especially in the defensive areas.

Despite the permanent acquisitions of George Boyd and Jordan Rhodes, the inactivity of Sheffield Wednesday in the transfer market this summer will be a concern.

Even though Carlos Carvalhal has built a side which on paper is more than capable of competing for automatic promotion, Carvalhal will be wary of the dangers of standing still.

Since the defeat in the play-offs to the eventual winners Huddersfield Town, Carvalhal made it clear that he was looking to address Sheffield Wednesday’s defence and find a replacement for Glenn Loovens.

Although it appears that Sheffield Wednesday are close to signing Swiss international Johan Djourou from Hamburg, Carvalhal will be looking for at least one more centre half as a means of providing competition and cover.

One player who has been attracting a lot of attention from England this summer is Marcel Tisserand of recently relegated German side Ingolstadt.

The 24-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo international who is currently valued at £2.55m was extremely impressive for Ingolstadt, despite their eventual relegation from the Bundesliga.

A string of impressive performances attracted a long line of suitors including a number of Premier League sides and also Championship side Middlesbrough.

Whilst Middlesbrough lead the chase for Tisserand, it appears that any move from the North East side will depend on the potential sale of Ben Gibson.

This could create a window of opportunity for Sheffield Wednesday, not only would the signing of Marcel Tisserand significantly strengthen Sheffield Wednesday’s centre-half options, it would also potentially weaken an automatic promotion rival.

Although Ingolstadt are remaining resilient, it is looking increasingly likely that Tisserand will leave before the transfer window closes.

If Sheffield Wednesday move quickly, South Yorkshire could potentially be his next destination.
