Sheffield Wednesday continue to falter along this season, sitting down just below mid-table and suffering some bad defeats already under manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Despite guiding the Owls to the playoffs in consecutive seasons, including a playoff final, the Portuguese manager is coming under increasing pressure at Hillsborough as he seeks to turn around their form and mount another promotion charge.

However, it does appear the writing is on the wall for the Owls coach, and Wednesday could well seek to replace him before the busy winter schedule takes hold and it becomes too little too late in terms of a promotion push.

One man who the Owls could look to to replace Carvalhal is former Middlesbrough gaffer Aitor Karanka.

The Spaniard drove Boro to promotion two seasons only to lose his job in the Premier League with the Teesside club struggling to get points on the board, however, there are plenty of voices in football who think he was harshly dealt with.

He has been out of work since, but his CV is excellent, including a spell with Real Madrid working with Jose Mourinho, which can never be a bad thing.

While many Owls fans might want a change from a continental manager, Karanka does have the record in England to back up his methods. His Middlesbrough side were one of the most solid teams we have seen in the Championship for some years, and if he could instill this method at Hillsborough, he could be successful.

Wednesday have a talented squad, there is no doubt about it, they just need someone to get the best out of them. Karanka could be that man.
