Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is set to hold contract talks with the club this week, as his deal at Hillsborough enters its final months.

Westwood was a peripheral figure in the Owls squad at the start of the season under previous manager Jos Luhakay, and never featured in the league for Wednesday under the Dutchman.

Since Luhakay's departure however, Westwood has reclaimed his place between the sticks for The Owls, appearing in 19 league games since Luhakay's sacking before a knee injury ruled him out of Wednesday's Easter fixtures against Norwich and Bristol City.

The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract at Hillsborough at the end of the season, but it seems his time with the Yorkshire side is far from over.

According to The Sheffield Star, Westwood is set for contract talks with the club this week, claiming that Owls boss Steve Bruce has dismissed reports linking the 'keeper with a move to Huddersfield by saying: "I haven't heard anything like that at all.

"I haven't sat down with Keiren yet but we will do this week and see what happens."

Since joining Wednesday in July 2014 following his release from Sunderland, Westwood has made a total of 163 appearances in all competitions for The Owls.

The verdict

This makes sense in every way for Wednesday.

Westwood is popular with the Hillsborough faithful so his stay would keep them happy, and on the pitch the has been crucial to Wednesday's upturn in form since the appointment of Bruce.

It is hard to see why they wouldn't want to keep him.
