Sheffield Wednesday were last night handed a double boost during their 4-0 victory over Harrogate Town as both George Byers and Massimo Luongo took to the pitch.

The duo were previously sidelined through injury for the Owls, with Byers having been out with a groin injury since September, whilst Luongo had previously been nursing a hamstring injury which has kept him out of action since August.

It was certainly a great evening for Byers in particular, with the former Swansea City man marking the occasion with as goal as he headed home from Olamide Shodipo’s in the second half.

Both players were given 70 minutes to impress and build up their fitness by Darren Moore and it is clear that the club enjoyed seeing them return to action, as they posted the following message on Twitter last night:

Having both of the midfielders back is certainly a big boost for Moore and his staff as it gives the squad a lot more depth during the course of this traditionally congested winter period, with the Owls also having plenty of cup games to contend with.

It now appears likely that the two players will be involved for their side against Gillingham at the weekend, especially as Wednesday will be seeking to pick up more points during the international break.

Luongo brings more sturdiness to the midfield and in time should slot in nicely alongside Barry Bannan once more.

Whilst Byers offers a goal threat and clearly has a bit of a point to prove after Wednesday made such a concerted effort to bring him to the football club last summer.

With the Owls just two points off the play-off places in Sky Bet League One, this is a welcome boost that could see them go on a winning run as they look to push into the promotion picture before the new year.
