Sheffield Wednesday have announced that goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has signed a new, long-term contract with the club, keeping him at Hillsborough until 2024.

A graduate of Wednesday's academy, Dawson has made a total of 58 appearances in all competitions for the Owls since making his debut back in 2016, and has seemingly taken over from Keiren Westwood as the club's first-choice goalkeeper in the past few months, following an extended run in the side under Garry Monk.

Dawson's contract with Wednesday had been set to expire at the end of this season, something which had seemingly put a number of clubs on high alert.

It had been reported earlier in the campaign that the Owls' Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Derby County, as well as Scottish giants Rangers, had all been interested in a move for the 24-year-old.

Now however, Dawson looks set to be staying put for some time yet, with the goalkeeper putting pen to paper on a new four-and-half-year deal, securing his future at the club until the end of the 2023/24 season, bringing an end to any speculation about his immediate future.

Wednesday are currently tenth in the Championship table, four points adrift of the play-off places ahead of their trip to struggling Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.

The Verdict

This is an excellent piece of business by Wednesday.

Dawson has been hugely impressive since stepping in between the posts for the Owls this season, so keeping him at the club long-term makes perfect sense.

Indeed, given the level of interest there supposedly was in the 24-year-old, and the length of the contract he has now signed at Hillsbrough, this feels like a big statement of intent from the Owls.

It also seems to reflect well on the club as a whole, given the size of the commitment Dawson has been willing to make to them here, something they now look set to benefit from for years to come.
