Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End have joined Queens Park Rangers in the race to sign Jordan Hugill from West Ham United, according to Football London.

Hugill is surplus to requirements at West Ham and will be allowed to move away this summer, probably on loan to the Championship.

Given the former Preston striker's displays for the Lilywhites in the Championship, he is unsurprisingly being targeted by a few clubs.

QPR are desperate to bring a new striker in and Hugill is seen as an alternative to Derby County's Chris Martin.

Sheffield Wednesday and Preston are ready to rival the Hoops for the 26-year-old, though, who only managed three substitute appearances for the Hammers after joining in January.

Prior to that, the former Port Vale forward had netted eight Championship goals in 27 games for Preston and he hit 12 league goals the season before.

West Ham signed Hugill with relegation in mind, thinking that he would be a decent player to lead a promotion push if they did finish in the bottom three.

But after staying up with relative comfort, they are ready to let him leave as this Championship trio circle.

The Verdict

With Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll and potentially a new striker at West Ham, Hugill needs to leave for the sake of his own career.

His work rate, strength and ability to score goals would be appealing for QPR, Preston or Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and a loan deal would be decent for all parties.

While he has not yet shown that he can be a 20-goal striker, he would be improve the depth of all these sides' attacking departments.
