Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a boost today, with Gary Hooper and Kieran Lee fit enough to start in an under-23 fixture.

Jos Luhukay has been unable to call on Hooper or Lee during his time at Hillsborough, with both players having terrible luck with injuries.

Hooper, who scored 11 goals last season, has been out since December, whilst Lee hasn’t featured since the same month, with the midfielder’s last outing coming under Carlos Carvalhal.

Now, both players are making strides to full fitness, with Dom Howson from the Sheffield Star confirming that they are lining up for the club’s under-23s against Colchester.

Wednesday have enjoyed a strong start to the season under Luhukay, who is looking to get the Owls challenging for play-off football after last year’s disappointing campaign.

After six fixtures, Luhukay’s side have 10 points to their name, which leaves them just a single point outside the play-offs heading into a busy period.

The Owls are back in action at the weekend following the international break, with Luhukay’s side taking on Stoke City at Hillsborough before trips to Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

The Verdict

This will be a great boost for Luhukay at a crucial stage of the season.

The Owls have some really tough fixtures coming up, and if Hooper and Lee can get through a couple of under-23 fixtures unscathed, they may be able to get back involved with the first-team soon.

There’s no doubting that Hooper and Lee are two of the division’s best in their respective positions, so it’s hard to not see the positives.
