Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan will be staying at Hillsborough despite late attempts from Brentford to sign the midfielder.

It has emerged over the course of the last 48 hours that Bannan was a target for Brentford and Thomas Frank.

Reports from Football Insider earlier today revealed how the Bees had launched two separate attempts to lure the 30-year-old out of South Yorkshire. The first of those bids was reported at £1.25m, with the second up at £1.5m. Ultimately, both were rejected.

Now, a further update has come from reliable journalist, Alan Nixon. He's been quizzed on Bannan, but has offered a blunt response claiming offers have been rejected and Bannan will be sticking around at Hillsborough.

Bannan has been with the Owls for some time now and has passed 200 appearances for the club. Garry Monk has trusted the Scot with the captain's armband at Hillsborough this season, as he looks to galvanise his side against a 12-point deduction that's left them fighting an uphill battle to survive in the Championship.

They've picked up five points from the opening four fixtures of the season and take on Birmingham City this weekend.

The Verdict

This is some boost for Wednesday.

The signings of Jack Marriott and Aden Flint might steal the headlines, but retaining Bannan was the key thing today.

He's Monk's skipper and accepting a low offer from Brentford would have been such a bad statement of intent.

Now, the focus needs to be on signing the midfielder up to fresh terms and a new contract at Hillsborough.
