Sheffield Wednesday have issued a strong response to Norwich City’s derisory attempt to lure Jordan Rhodes out of Hillsborough on a free transfer this summer.

Rhodes was of course part of the Norwich squad that stormed to automatic promotion and the Championship title last season, with the striker returning six goals in 36 outings for the Canaries.

However, he’s since returned to Hillsborough following that loan, linking up with Lee Bullen – the man set to lead Wednesday into battle with Reading on Saturday after Steve Bruce’s departure.

Yet, the Sheffield Star note how Norwich have tried to re-sign Rhodes again ahead of the opening weekend of the Championship season, with the Premier League new-boys looking to do so on a free transfer.

The Wednesday hierarchy, according to the report, has knocked that back and has been left annoyed.

Rhodes, Wednesday’s club-record signing, has flopped somewhat since his move to South Yorkshire in January 2017.

In 55 outings, the 29-year-old has struck only 10 goals, with his differing form prompting last season’s switch across the Championship.

Even in a flying side at Norwich last season, Rhodes struck an average of only one every six games, with Teemu Pukki stealing the headlines with his goalscoring exploits.

The Verdict

However bad Rhodes has been for Wednesday, Norwich were never going to land him on a free, it is just laughable to even think that.

From Wednesday’s point of view, they might as well gamble of Rhodes finding the form he showed previously in this case, rather than lose their club-record signing for nothing.

In my eyes, if Norwich want Rhodes, they will get him, as Wednesday would probably like to move him on, but the Canaries have to have a little more class and ambition with their approach.
