Sheffield Wednesday have certainly underwhelmed this season, a mid-table finish is far less than expectant fans had hoped for.

The surge to the top six last time out gave them increased hope of finally returning to the top flight, but a series of injuries coupled with under-performing stars has led to a secure but not spectacular finish to the season.

Jos Luhukay has a big summer ahead of him as he looks to mould the side into his own vision, rather than pick up the pieces of Carlos Carvalhal's reign.

Whilst the former manager is now established in the Premier League, his predecessor has much to do to convince the Owls fans he's the man to lead them forward.

Many will be looking towards recruitment and where they can strengthen, but in order to do so some players must be shown the door. We feel that there's a few individuals whose time at Hillsborough is up, so here are FLW's three players who need axing ahead of the new chapter in Wednesday's history.

Rhodes was a big money buy, a player who guaranteed goals and who it was hoped could link up with Gary Hooper to bring the Premier League even closer than the last campaign.

Instead he's stuttered and faltered, not even getting a game in recent weeks as both management and fans lose confidence. Rhodes will score goals again, but it might be best for all if he left Hillsborough in the summer.

That way, they recoup some of his big transfer fee and he gets a fresh start elsewhere.

Glenn Loovens is coming to the end of his contract and possibly the end of his career. He might be one of the main faces at Sheffield Wednesday, but he represents the old guard with one foot in the past.

It is better to go out on a high than fade away and whilst Loovens has been playing regular football, perhaps now is the time to call it quits. He could still do a job in League One for someone, but the fear is another Championship season might just be a bridge too far.

Who? I imagine that is the question on many Owls fans lips when they hear the name of the Portuguese player with the seemingly endless list of injuries and ailments. He's played just 12 times this season, adding to his two appearances last campaign.

Could a buyer be found? Probably not given that he's played fewer games than most over the last 24 months, but surely his future lays away from Sheffield and given a chance, Jos Luhukay must cut his losses and run. Wednesday need players fit and ready to fight, not forever horizontal on the treatment table.
