Sheffield Wednesday are in 'advanced talks' to sign keeper David Stockdale on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old is out of contract with Wycombe Wanderers in the coming weeks and whilst they have offered him a new deal as they look for him to stay, the stopper is assessing his options.

And, according to Yorkshire Live, the Owls have made a move to land Stockdale, and there is a growing belief that they will secure the former Fulham man ahead of next season with an agreement believed to be close.

Bringing in a new number one is sure to be a priority for Darren Moore after Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who was number one last season, returned to Burnley following his loan spell.

In Stockdale, Wednesday would be getting a proven performer at this level, as he is just off the back of an excellent individual campaign with the Chairboys, where he played every game as they reached the play-off final before falling to defeat against Sunderland at Wembley.

He has plenty of experience further up the Football League as well, having featured for Brighton and Birmingham among others.

The verdict

This would be a very smart bit of business for Wednesday as Stockdale is still a very good keeper for any League One side, as he proved last season.

Of course, he's not a long-term solution but it's all about going up next season for the Owls and Stockdale will help significantly on that front.

As well as improving the team following Peacock-Farrell's exit, he will be a positive influence in the dressing room where his experience could help. So, this would be a very good deal for Moore.
