Sheffield Wednesday are preparing an approach to sign Bristol City winger Callum O'Dowda, with just hours to go until the transfer deadline, according to Football Insider

The 24-year-old was an important player for Bristol City last season, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 35 appearances in all competitions, as the Robins just missed on the Championship play-offs.

O'Dowda is in the final year of his contract at Bristol City and his future at Ashton Gate is still uncertain. The Republic of Ireland intentional came close to signing a new deal earlier this year, before changing his mind.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson is keen to keep hold of the player and remains hopeful that he will sign a contract extension.

However, this latest report states that Sheffield Wednesday are now plotting a late move to sign the winger, after learning that Bristol City are still willing to sell him.

Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship table last season, ten points outside the play-offs and are keen to strengthen their squad before the transfer deadline.

The Owls have already made one deadline day signing, with Australia midfielder Massimo Luongo joining from QPR on a permanent deal.

The Verdict

This could be a great signing for Sheffield Wednesday. O'Dowda is a good player and he could be tempted by a move to Hillsborough. He's got plenty of experience in the Championship too, so he would be able to make an immediate impact for the Owls.

O'Dowda seems unwilling to sign a new deal, so it would make sense for Bristol City to cash in on him during this transfer window, rather than risk him leaving for free when his contract expires next summer and they might be able to get a decent fee for him.

Bristol City are willing to let the player leave, but it will be interesting to see if Sheffield Wednesday are prepared to come up with the money for him and they will have to get a move on if they are to get the deal finalised before the transfer deadline.
