Sheffield Wednesday are edging closer to welcoming back Fernando Forestieri into the first-team squad, with the Italian completing his ban from using racist language towards Mansfield Town's Krystian Pearce.

Forestieri has struggled for consistent game time due to off-the-field issues and various injuries in recent years, and he'll be keen to recapture his best form in front of goal.

It's easy to forget that Forestieri netted twelve goals in the 2016/17 season for the Owls, so it's clear to see that he can cut it at this level.

But with a number of attacking options available to Garry Monk, the 29-year-old could find it tougher than ever before to break back into the starting XI.

The likes of Steven Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu have looked sharp in front of goal so far this term, with Fletcher in particular catching the eye with his performances, with the Scotsman having five goals to his name this season.

One player that will be fearing for his future at Hillsborough will be Sam Winnall though, with the former Barnsley man struggling for confidence in the Championship.

Winnall has had his fair share of injury problems in recent years, and will surely know that his days are numbered in the first-team picture, especially with Forestieri nearing a return to Monk's squad.

It has been revealed by the Sheffield Star that the Italian forward is set feature in a friendly for Sheffield Wednesday against Rochdale over the international break, and a strong performance from him could give Monk a welcome selection dilemma heading into their game against Cardiff City.

Winnall has had his opportunity in the starting XI, but has wasted it, with the forward spurning a number of golden opportunities for the Owls against Everton in the Carabao Cup.

So he can't have any complaints if he wasn't to feature in the first-team squad much this season, and it certainly wouldn't come as a surprise to see Winnall push for a move elsewhere when the transfer window opens in January.
