Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that he is planning talks with Norwich City over the future of on loan Canaries striker Jordan Rhodes.

Bruce’s predecessor Jos Luhukay oversaw Rhodes’ exit from Hillsborough in the summer, with the striker linking up with Norwich on a season-long loan.

Rhodes, 29, has featured in 35 Championship games for the high-flying Canaries, scoring six league goals and registering one assist. His league outings have been limited due to the exceptional form of Teemu Pukki, but the forward has managed to add three League Cup goals to his total.

Ahead of this weekend's meeting with Norwich, Bruce has been touching on the future of Rhodes and his spell at Carrow Road.

"Well I mean it probably hasn’t gone as well in terms of timing on the pitch for Jordan," Bruce told Wednesday’s official Facebook page. "I think the big thing is just the minutes he’s played has been obviously limited since they’ve had a little bit of a shuffle - they play one up top and one off.

"And he hasn’t probably played as much as he’d like, but when you’ve got somebody who’s scored 27 goals (Pukki) and the system they play has probably limited Jordan to not enough minutes on the pitch.

"But we’ll have a conversation with Norwich over the next week or so, two weeks, and see where the situation lies."

For Bruce and Wednesday this weekend they’re looking to bounce back after a frustrating couple of weeks. A 13-game unbeaten run had the Owls on the verge of play-off football, but defeats to Aston Villa and Leeds in the last three fixtures have made that task look difficult.

Daniel Farke’s promotion-chasing Canaries will offer another tough test, with the Yellows able to confirm their promotion if results go their way.

The Verdict

It hasn’t been the spell Rhodes would’ve hoped for at Norwich, but as Bruce mentions, you’ve got to take into account the form of Pukki and how good Norwich have been.

He was never going to get in ahead of him when he found his best, and to score six goals in the Championship given his minutes on the pitch, is quite impressive.

A new manager at Hillsborough offers new opportunities for Rhodes, and the talks are something he is likely to be interested in.
