George Byers and Massimo Luongo are closing in on their league returns from injury after playing against Harrogate Town in the Papa John's Trophy last night.

The Owls ran out 4-0 winners as they kept their unbeaten run going in all competitions and it was good for Darren Moore to see both Byers and Luongo involved in the action as they upped their return from their respective injuries.

Byers, of course, capped the night off with his first goal for the Owls and it appears as though, should neither suffer a reaction from the match, both will be involved in the matchday squad this weekend as Wednesday face Gillingham in Sky Bet League One.

Speaking post the Harrogate game, Moore revealed via Yorkshire Live:

"I thought because of the magnitude of the game that it was the perfect game to play them in," said Moore. "You want to get them up to speed.

"Once they got into the groove of the game, I thought both of them showed their technical ability. They used the ball really well.

"I think both of them will feel really good and it will give them a lot of confidence going forward.

"Hopefully they will come through the game unscathed over the next 24 hours and that means they will look to be added back to the squad in terms of team selection."

The Verdict

It was a positive night for several reasons for Wednesday on Tuesday evening as they kept momentum going and also got minutes in the legs of two players that have really needed them.

Both Byers and Luongo could play key parts this season in the club's challenge for promotion and Moore will be eager to have them available now for the foreseeable future.
