Steve Bruce will be looking forward to the summer as he gets the chance to make his own mark on this Sheffield Wednesday side that have done very well since he took over.

The experienced boss took charge at the start of February and a magnificent run took them from nervously looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone, to putting them in contention for the play-offs.

Defeat at Leeds on Saturday realistically ends any hope they have of reaching the top six but there is an excitement back at Hillsborough, and an optimism that they could do well moving forwards.

However, it's clear they will need new additions and one man who has been linked with a move to the Owls is Wigan's Nick Powell.

And, you could make a strong case to say he would be a good capture for the Yorkshire side as his ability is clear to see and he scores a lot of goals.

Yet, it's also a risk when you look at his injury record, particularly for a club like Wednesday who have suffered more than most on that front over the years.

Gary Hooper is just returning after over 15 months out and Kieran Lee is another who has suffered terribly with injuries.

So, there would have to be a worry that Powell could be another good player at this level that just doesn't get out on the pitch enough.

As the ex-Manchester United man will be a free agent, he is going to be in a position where he can demand a big salary and the Owls have to be careful with what they spend.

Therefore, if they did make him a top earner they would need a guaranteed return and that won't be the case when you consider his injury record.

Powell missed two months of the current campaign from December and his absence hit Wigan very hard.

So, whilst you feel sorry for the player, who is also extremely talented, Wednesday would have to be wary of offering him a deal as they know more than most how frustrating it can be to have a lot of talent on the sidelines.
